Why Did You Decide to Become a Dentist?
While in high school, Dr. Calderwood ended up taking an anatomy class and immediately fell in love with the human body. He knew right away that he wanted to work in the medical field for his career! After he began to research different jobs in medicine, dentistry in particular became very fulfilling. Not only would he be able to help people, but he could work directly with his hands as well every day.
During this time in Dr. Calderwood’s life, he shadowed different professionals in the medical field and asked each individual an important question: “If you could do it all over again, would you pursue the same profession you are in?” He never met a single dentist who didn’t love their job, while there were quite a few physicians and other medical professionals who no longer seemed happy with their career path. After working as a dentist, he can definitely concur with his interviewees! Dentistry is the best profession out there, no question, and if he could start all over again, he wouldn’t hesitate to choose it once more!
You Study Dentistry?
After receiving his Bachelors of Science from Brigham Young University, Dr. Calderwood pursued his dental training at the University of Maryland, where he achieved his Doctor of Dental Surgery. Over the years, he has also taken hundreds of hours of continuing education in all aspects of dentistry, with a particular emphasis on cosmetic dentistry and dental implants. He is always striving to increase his knowledge, improve his skills, and stay up-to-date with the latest technology!
As for specific courses, Dr. Calderwood has attended multiple trainings at the SPEAR facility in Scottsdale, AZ as well as with the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. In fact, he has been honored as a Fellow with both the ICOI and the Academy of General Dentistry! He is actively involved with these additional dental organizations as well:
American Dental Association
Wasatch Back Dental Society
Utah Dental Association
Outside of the Dental Office, What Do You Like to Do?
Dr. Calderwood had four children with his late wife Lisa, who sadly passed from an aggressive brain tumor. In 2016, he remarried a fellow cancer widow named Kamille, who had three children with her late husband. They now have a wonderful blended family of seven kids in total.
As for personal hobbies, one of Dr. Calderwood’s biggest hobbies is traveling. He really enjoys learning all about new cultures, experiencing local cuisine, and seeing the architecture in different countries. At home, he enjoys being outside with his family in Utah’s beautiful mountains. They are all avid skiers in the winter and can be found on the local lakes in the summer, waterskiing and wake surfing. Other interests include off-roading, hiking, and mountain biking with their dog Annie, who is a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon.
